Funny - my hubby has collected the pressed pennies on vacations for years, and we continue to do so now that we're full-timing. Our travel memorabilia collections have always been limited to photos, pennies, postcards, frig magnets, and Christmas tree ornaments, so that's easy. :)

We have been on extended trips on both a boat and motor home. I would suggest thinking about your clothes in the RV in terms of what you will need and how easy it is to wash/dry/iron clothes. At home, I hang dry a lot of things. It's not so easy in the RV, and really hard on a boat. The older I get, the more I lean towards things that are machine washable and dryable, and don't need to be ironed. That said, the thing I miss the most on these trips are my Cuisinart and my Vita-Mix blender. I might have to cave and bring them along next time.

Thanks, I'm glad it can be of some use. Good luck you are in an exciting phase! It's a fine line to walk, you don't want to keep too much stuff and weigh yourself down, but you hate to buy everything again!Remember some of your habits won't change, so keep those things you use on a daily or even weekly basis. I like to bake and even though it's not a weekly endeavor, I did keep a stash of supplies because it makes me happy. I only keep one kind of soap in the shower, though, not like before where I might have a couple choices (you always get those gifts) because who needs to take up the extra room!Just remember to do a walk through after you've been on the road awhile because you'll settle into your life more and know what can be donated and tossed after seeing it sit for a few months.

What a helpful article. My husband and I have also moved many times. Our average in anyone place is around 18 months. We have gone from a 4000 SF home to a 800 SF apartment. We are currently planning on closing up shop in our 2600 SF condo and transitioning into a Class A Diesel pusher. Our timeline is 10 months and counting! We are pretty good at letting go of things, so my challenge is figuring out what to keep...what clothes, kitchen items, toiletries....are essential to long term RV living. Should I liquidate everything and start fresh or keep what I think I need and let things come and go as needed. What a fun dilemma :) Thanks for the advise and safe travels to you two.

Hi Chris, I hope this article helps your friend. The estate sale took place in our home. They came in and sorted, laid out, and priced everything. I don't think the service we used offered services to donate or clean our house, but I bet there are some that do. A lot of places will pick up items that you donate.

Great article! I forwarded to a friend who is overwhelmed at the idea of liquidating most of her belongings and moving from Chicago to NJ. She is a seasoned mover, as well. But she has accumulated lots of stuff. Thought this article could help. I am intrigued by #6, the Estate Sale. If I ever decided to move in a big way, I would seriously consider this option. Did the estate sale take place at your former home or were your belongings taken to an auction house? Did they also offer a service to donate the unsold items and clean your house? I read an article recently about this service.

Anyway, I am so glad I found your blog. It's great. Very entertaining and interesting.

Good tips! We are in the process of downsizing to move into our RV, from a home we've been in for 12 years. We have come to the same conclusion:we have boxes that we put in the attic when we moved in, & have never unpacked! Nobody needs this much stuff. We thought we had a lost a cat in the RV & eventually found he had crawled into the wiring under the dash! They will make you crazy.
